Compound Words-Grade XI and XII (Sound System)

Open Compound Words: They are created when the modifying adjective is used with its noun to create a new noun or when adverbs ending in -ly combine with another word. These are written as two separate words:

Ex: real estate, dinner table, living room, newly born, slowly uttered, deeply engraved, etc.

Closed Compound Words: Closed compound words are usually made up of only two words and written as a single word.

       Ex: fireman, workshop, notebook, etc.

Hyphenated Compound Words: These are the words written with a hyphen.

       Ex: long-term problems, mid-term Examination, one-half, father-in-law, two-fold, thirty-five, etc.

Use the box given on page no. 73, make compound words and check in a dictionary to see whether they exist and how they are written.
