New Nepal (Poem)-
by Siddhicharan Shrestha
Siddhicharan
Shrestha, who was born in May 1912 and passed away in 1992 AD, wrote the
political poetry New Nepal in Nepali, and Shreedhar Prasad Lohani translated it
into English. The poet was a writing revolutionist at the time. Because of his
writing, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison as well. He was nevertheless
freed after five years.
The poet
asserts that to obtain human dignity, all Nepalese people must speak
out in favor of justice and equality. He describes the concerns, emotions, and pathos
of the Nepalese people. He claims that despite repeated political system changes
and widespread uprisings by Nepalese citizens seeking a better life, only the
rich continue to get richer while the poor stay the same. The prevalence of
superstition, conflict, prejudice, and corruption, among other things, is
rising. Therefore, he calls on all Nepalis to get up, become aware of their
surroundings, and be told to leave any corrupt social structures in place so
that a new Nepal can replace the old practice and dogmatic ideology.
