A Sunny Morning by Serafin and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero (NEB XI)

A Sunny Morning by Serafin and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero

What is Drama?: Drama, a story that is typically told in a theater to an audience, is a kind of writing that uses speech and action on a stage in front of an audience to tell a tale about various emotions and a theme relating to various facets of life. The word "drama" is derived from the Greek verb "dran," which means "to do or to act." Play is another word for drama. The two masks connected to drama stand up for the classic contrast between humor and tragedy.

Drama’s Elements

1.     Plot - the events or order of the events in the play

6.     Song - the music which accompanies in the drama

7.     Spectacle - the visual impact, such as props and costumes, or what we might today call special effects.

About the Author: Serafin Alvarez Quintero was born in 1871 and died in 1938 and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero was born in 1873 and died in 1944 were two brothers and were Spanish dramatists. They were raised in Utrera, a little settlement in the Andalusia region of Spain, close to Seville. They were referred to as the theater in Madrid's Golden Boys, who worked together on around 200 dramas that covered topics including Andalusia's way of life, customs, and speech. They rose to stardom in the theater industry so quickly and constantly collaborated while they wrote. Glitio, their debut play for the theater, was written in 1889. Joaquin continued to use both identities when writing even after the passing of his brother Serafin. Obras Completas, a seven-volume collection of all of their plays, was released in the early 1950s.

Setting:  The setting of the play is a sunny morning in Madrid, Spain on a bench in the park.

TONE:

Ø Humour

Play’s Title Justification: Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo adore one another, but circumstances keep them apart. Despite the fact that they are idle today, they are vivacious, amorous, and dynamic, which fits the spirit of a sunny morning. They become unaware of their advanced age and mistake the pleasant reminiscence of their youth for a sunny morning. Thus, in my opinion, the play's title "A Sunny Morning" is appropriate.

Theme: The main theme of this play is a love affair, and it centers on two ex-lovers who reunite in a park in their 70s and try to remember their earlier flings. It makes an effort to depict the main characters' suffering that compels them to leave. Additionally, it seeks to demonstrate how they prepare for the start of their new lives by letting go of the past. Gonzalo and Laura each have elaborate personal histories that they might use to deceive one another. The play's primary goal is, however, to amuse the audience.

Humour and Irony: In the play's opening scene, humor is present. When Laura comments on Gonzalo's gait, her sense of humor is great. "A carriage wouldn't produce more dust than his feet," she claims. When she inquires about Gonzalo using his handkerchief as a shoe brush, the audience laughs. Gonzalo and Laura may have once been lovers, as suggested by references to the scene's location, the events' order, and their association. Ironically, they are reluctant to divulge their identities because they worry that their altered appearances will prevent them from fully experiencing their newfound happiness.

Summary: Serafin and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero wrote this fiction in 1905. It was created to amuse the readership. It is a one-act play in a literary genre that is humorous and satirical. At the age of 70, former lovers Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura who had had a deep love in their youth reconnected in the park on a lovely morning. In their youth, they were intensely in love, but the terrible hand of fate tore them apart. Due to their misfortune and Dora's parents' unfavorable roles, they have split apart. They have aged considerably and lost their appeal and joyous past. They couldn't tell each other apart at first, but with time they got to know one another and didn't divulge their true identities. Don Gonzalo irritated Laura, who accused him of scaring the birds that were bringing her breadcrumbs, and she responded with a barrage of insults.

She describes him as a foul-mannered man. Gonzalo dislikes sharing a bench with the elderly woman, but after using their abrasive words of disapproval, he gives in and they both rebuild a nice relationship. Gonzalo introduces himself as being from Valencia during their conversation and expresses surprise at learning Laura is from Marcela. He claims to know Laura, who he claims to think is the most stunning woman he has ever seen, and who lives in a villa there. They both learn they were once lovers after hearing from one another. But they make it seem as though they are hiding. Gonzalo gets into a brawl with a shopkeeper one day. The merchant insults Gonzalo as he waits for Laura to sing in front of her window. During the fight, he hurts the shopkeeper. He departs from his hometown out of fear of a confrontation with the shopkeeper. After that, he makes numerous attempts to write to Laura but Laura's parents always intercept his letters.

Both of them recount their death-related tales to one another. The elderly Don Gonzalo claims to be the young man's cousin. He claims that the young Gonzalo must depart since he gravely hurts the merchant. He enlists and deploys to Africa. He dies a sad end in the struggle and is killed. The elderly Laura claims to know the "Silver Maiden" Laura and to have been her friend when she was younger. Additionally, she makes up the terrible tale of her relationship with the valiant young man Gonzalo. The elderly woman reveals that Gonzalo's friend waits for him for a very long time. No information about him is given to her. She is observed leaving her home one afternoon while writing Gonzalo's name in the sand. She then settles down on a rock and concentrates on the horizon before drowning in the sea as the waves sweep her out to sea. Every morning when he walks through the rose garden, he throws a bunch of flowers up to her balcony, where she would later return the flowers to him in the late afternoon. Even though they are deeply in love, Laura's parents want her to wed a wealthy local businessman. Gonzalo loses hope for Laura after they have been apart for three months. Gonzalo marries the ballet dancer he met while on the run in Paris. He started acting like a family man. On the other side, Laura married after their separation lasted two years. Even though they both know they are lying, they both maintain their deception.

Both of them are able to remember their passionate love affair as they re-cross paths in the park after almost 50 years. However, they hide the truth since they have moved on from their romantic history. At the play's conclusion, they decide to meet up at the park once more the following day, provided it's a sunny morning.

Climax: The story's climax occurs when two passionate ex-lovers reconnect in a park nearly 50 years after they split up. Additionally, the audience is intrigued by the manner they attempt to conceal their true identities. Gonzalo and Laura may have once been lovers, as suggested by her statement, association, mention of the place, and order of events. The turning point is when they decide to move on from their past and succeed in starting a new life. It's also when they communicate openly and amicably despite the fact that they are ex-lovers.

Assimilation: Two years later, Laura got married and started a family. Similar to Gonzalo, who was hurt by his failed love, he wed a ballet dancer three months later and moved to Paris. Despite being apart, they continued to long for the passionate love in their hearts. Both of them were able to remember their passionate love affair when they reconnected in the park after nearly 50 years. Despite learning the truth about one another, they did not want to share it because they had lost their charming youth.
