Contrast
Marker- In spite of/Despite, although, & However
The
conjunctions/connectives or joining words to make the complex sentences that
show opposite relationships from the first part of the sentence to the second
part of the sentence are called contrast markers namely Despite or In spite of, although, and however
for the students of NEB- be they XI or XII, students. The general rules of them
are shown as follows:
Use
of Despite/In Spite of
1.
Despite/In Spite of + Noun or Noun Phrase, Subject + Verb + Object.
For
Instances:
Despite
his vast knowledge, he's asking me questions via messages.
In
spite of his vast knowledge, he's asking me questions via messages.
Note
that naming words will be expounded as nouns, and/or if we have different names
for places, people, things, and animals, they are called nouns. Further, when
we add something to a noun can be a noun phrase like a pen, a beautiful pen, my
pen, a writing pen, etc., are the noun phrases.

If we have a chaos of using a noun or a noun phrase, we can simply use the
given structure below to make our answer correct:
Despite/In
Spite of + the fact that +Subject + Verb + Object, Subject + Verb + Object.
For
examples:
question:
He is handsome, but no girls purpose him to date.
Answer:
Despite/In Spite of the fact that he is handsome, no girls purpose him to date.
3.
We ought not to use BUT and STILL while using Despite/In Spite of.
Use
of Although
1.
Although/though/even though + Subject + Verb + Object, Subject + Verb + Object.
question:
He is handsome, but no girls purpose him to date.
Answer:
Although he is handsome, no girls purpose him to date.
or
no girls purpose him to date although he is handsome.
Use
of However
However,
is written at the beginning of the sentence most times. after using, however,
we must use a comma.
question:
He is handsome, and no girls purpose him to date.
Answer:
However, he is handsome, and no girls purpose him to date.

B.
Join the following pairs of sentences twice, using although/though/even though
and despite/in spite of as in the example.
Example:
Nepali people have limited income. They are very happy.
i.
Although Nepali people have limited income, they are happy.
ii.
Nepali people are happy in spite of their limited income.
a.
He is a millionaire. He lives in a simple house.
b.
The weather was extremely bad. The pilot landed the plane safely.
c.
We study in the same college. We hardly see each other.
d.
It rained heavily. We enjoyed our holiday.
e.
I had an umbrella. I got wet in the rain.
f.
I was really tired. I could not sleep for a moment.
g.
She has a very good accent in English. She failed the interview for a newsreader.
h.
Lhasa has extremely cold weather in winter. Millions of tourists go there in
January.
i.
He was badly injured in the first round of the boxing match. He was victorious
in the third round.
