Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable. The figures in the margin indicate full marks

 1. Read the following text about a fitness activity and complete the tasks that follow. 15

You want to be healthy. You know, you need to exercise more. But if you are not ready to grunt through an hour of kickboxing, don't despair. There is a growing agreement among exercise researchers that the intense physical activities offered by most health clubs are not the only–or even the preferable–path to better health. Indeed, the best thing for most of us may be to just walk. Yes, walk. At a reasonable vigorous clip (five to six km/h) for half an hour or so, maybe five or six times a week. You may not feel the benefits all at once, but the evidence suggests that over the long term, a regular walking routine can do a world of preventive good. Walking, in fact, maybe the perfect exercise. For starters, it's one of the safest things you can do with your body. It's much easier on the knees than running and doesn't trigger untoward side effects. Dr.Johnna Manson, chief of preventive medicine at a leading Harvard woman's hospital says, "If everyone were to walk briskly 30 minutes a day, we could cut the incidence of many chronic diseases by 30 to 40 percent." She further says, ''Regular physical activity is probably as close to a magic bullet as we will come in modern medicine." And for those of us who don't have half-hour chunks of time, the news gets even better.

Several recent studies suggest that walking briskly three or four times a day for 10 minutes at a time may provide many of the same benefits as walking continuously for 30 minutes. Here's how to make the most of your walking routine. First, get into gear. Walker's shoes need to have enough room at the front for the feet to spread. Then, ease on down that road. Avoid muscle aches by starting slowly and incorporating gentle stretches into both your warm-up and cool-down. You must plot your course. Some people walk at a specific time each day. Others shoehorn walking into their routines by parking the car a few minutes from the store or taking the stairs instead of the lift. Record your efforts, including how long and how far you walked. Jotting down improvements keeps you motivated and challenges you to do better. Since walking affects you in so many ways at once, it's difficult to determine precisely why it's good for you. But much of the evidence gathered so far is compelling. Sub. Code. 0041 Brisk walking is good for the heart—which makes a lot of sense.

The heart is a muscle after all, and anything that makes the blood flow faster through a muscle helps keep it in shape. But regular walking also lowers blood pressure, which decreases the stress on the arteries. It can boost the amount of HDL cholesterol (the good one) in our blood. It even seems to make the blood less "sticky", and therefore less likely to produce unwanted clots. This all adds up to as much as a 50 percent reduction in the risk of suffering a heart attack.

Ans: Rakesh was the first son in the poor, illiterate and down-to-earth family in an Indian rural arena to acquire the quality education; therefore, his achievement was a topic of special interest in the neighborhood. Further, his parents had made enormous sacrifices to pay for his education and subsequent attendance at medical school. Both the family and the neighbors had reason to be proud owing to his toil that they had comprehended. In others, Rakesh was a son born to illiterate parents. His father, Varma, worked as a kerosene vendor and dreamt that Rakesh had a good education and a prestigious profession. Rakesh was the first to receive an education among his siblings. To his father’s expectation, Rakesh performs very well in his studies and scores the highest rank in the country in his medical examination, which becomes a sensation among his neighbours and becomes a matter of discussion in the neighbourhood.

b. Describe the irritating things that the people do with the strange old man. (A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings)

ANS: People begin doing bothersome activities to the elderly man who has enormous wings because he is an entirely more unique than the rest of the beings in this Spanish magic realism story. After Pelayo and Elisenda find the disoriented old man they keep him in their chicken coop. Soon, people learn that a ‘flesh-and-blood’ angel is held captive in Pelayo’s house and begin to flock in his house to see the unearthly creature. For the most part, the strange old man ignores the people. However, the curious and unfeeling people toss him things (mothballs) to make him eat, the cripples pull out his feathers to ‘touch their defective parts with’; sear him with a branding iron to find out whether he’s still alive and even the ‘most merciful’ throw stones at him to raise him so they can see him standing. He becomes enraged but people do not feel for his situation, health or safety and simply view him as a new form of entertainment.

(OR)Describe marriage as a social institution. (Marriage as a Social Institution)

A social institution is an interconnected set of social roles and conventions that are organized and create behavioral patterns that help society's basic requirements are met. Marriage is the union of two persons who are partners in a personal relationship and is morally and legally acknowledged. Because it is observed in all human communities worldwide in all societies, marriage is a global institution. Because the bond between the couple is acknowledged by social and legal legislation as a way of satisfying social, physical, and family necessities, marriage is a social institution with moral obligations.

Marriage is a social institution that is patterned culturally and interwoven into other fundamental social institutions including politics, the economy, and education. Because it serves as the cornerstone of a family and fosters social stability in a community, marriage can also be viewed as a social institution.

c. Human beings are connected with hope. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons. (The Awakening Age)

In "The Awakening Age," Ben Okri depicts the tribulations of the African people. He also urges peace, solidarity, and unity among all peoples, regardless of where they are from. To bring about the awakening era of enlightenment, hope, wisdom, and togetherness, he seeks to awaken the world and its people from darkness, poverty, and misery. This poem tells the tale of how vulnerable groups in Nigeria have endured a long journey of hunger, poverty, unemployment, and conflicts involving ethnic, religious, political, terroristic, and other conflicts. The poet describes the trip of those who walk down the meridian line and have a glimpse of a new planet at the opening of the poem. These tourists may be moved to awaken the poor people to a world of freedom, equality, and prosperity after witnessing their pains and hardships. Therefore, I entirely agree with the statement of hope because we all are alive to have better life in the forthcoming g era.

d. Do you agree with the author‘s view that history has been a major debatable issue in the present world? Give your opinion. (Humility)

In the essay, ‘Humility’ the author Yuval Noah Harari deals with a controversial debate on human history. Humanity’s illusions of superiority and mastery. He sheds light on how people of different groups and cultures have claimed and believed that history’s significant inventions are their contributions. Harari debunks them and claims that morality, art, spirituality and creativity are universally embedded in every human being’s DNA. Yes, I believe the author that history has been a major debatable issue in the present world.

One of the root problems with the people of today is that they are providing credentials to their culture and history only. People of different groups boast about their culture and believe that their cultures are the foundation of human history.  Harari illustrates the beliefs of the Greeks regarding the beginning of history with Homer, Sophocles, and Plato; the beliefs of the Indians regarding the invention of the airplane and nuclear bombs by ancient sages; the beliefs of Chinese nationalists regarding the origin of many great ideas; the beliefs of the Jews regarding their status as the chosen people; and then the beliefs within various religious tribes and cultures. No group is unique, even though each thinks it is the center of the world and the creator of the most significant ideas and contributions. Such claims are a blatant display of egotism, whether they are made about Arabia in the time of Muhammad, Greece in the time of Plato, or China in the time of the Yellow Emperor. He has cited Judaism as an exemplar of such self-important narratives because he believes it is more polite to criticize one's own people than to criticize foreigners. With this arrogant faith, these people tend to stand in the centre of the world. But I believe history should not be reduced to a simple narrative of progress—of good people doing good things; bad people doing terrible things. Instead, as the author attests morality, art, spirituality and creativity are universally embedded in our DNA. Hence, every religion, culture and civilization has equally contributed in its own right.

(OR)How can wisdom be taught? Give examples. (Knowledge and Wisdom)

In an effort to understand the world, wisdom is a process that considers all of our prior experiences and information. Understanding is only a small part of what it entails; judgments about what is right and wrong can also be made. It is something that only people are capable of, and both the heart and the mind are where it is found because wisdom requires a soul, machines will never be able to attain it on their own. Further, wisdom is the practical application. Factors that contribute to teach wisdom are: Sense of proportion, Comprehensiveness with broad feeling, Emancipation from personal prejudice and tyranny of sensory perception, Impartiality, Awareness of human needs and understanding….

Ans:

Balaju-16, Kathmandu

April 11th, 2023.

Dear Lux,

I hope that you're in good health and spirit. I just wanted to tell you that the best books as you go through, they will transform you positively both in writing and speaking. Today I want to inform you about a very inspiring book I have read recently and asked you to read is Mindset. I am sure you will like it too. The book is penned by Carol Susan Dweck, a psychologist and professor from the US.

The author uncovers via Mindset that the way we perceive our skills and talents may have a significant impact on our success in practically every area of human effort and other creative endeavors. A growth mindset that holds that abilities can be developed is more likely to lead to success than a fixed mindset, which holds that abilities are fixed. We may inspire those we lead, educate, and love to alter their lives and our own if we have the correct attitude. Anyway, the growth mentality is the conviction that brainpower can be increased. This book can help if you frequently seem to lose instead of win but yet want to be a better and more optimistic leader, student, business executive, parent, or teacher. Dweck says that becoming is better than being.

We take great pride in our skills, attributes, and accomplishments, but we do not talk much with our coworkers about failure or how we handle it. A growth mindset, on the other hand, emphasizes taking on new challenges, moving forward, and overcoming the fear of failing like a person who has a preconceived notion of how others facing challenging circumstances should behave loses comfort and self-assurance. On the other side, the person who has a growth mentality may be able to see prejudice for what it is and confidently combats inequity. Further, by surrounding themselves with only positive news and avoiding the truth, fixed mentality leaders satisfy their need for approval. The success of a company is frequently determined by the thinking of the leader. Individuals with fixed mindsets have fixed beliefs about their team. Some individuals possess talent and superiority while others do not. To foster growth for both their businesses and the people who work there, leaders and organizations can transform their mindsets. I highly recommend you reading it since it will make you feel richer and more comfortable for having done so. I would love to hear from you. Please do write back to me.

Warm wishes,

ABD
